A lot of things were kept secret in Destiny 2’s new Season of the Haunted ahead of time. The Leviathan returning? I can understand why that was a fun surprise. Solar 3.0? That…makes a bit less sense, but sure, the joy of buildcrafting discovery right when it goes live, I suppose.
And yet, in a sprawling 9,000 word TWAB a few weeks ago that spent enormous sections on things like Airborne Effectiveness and Flinch Resistance, we did not even touch on what is easily the most significant change to Destiny stats in the history of the series.
Resilience! What did they do to Resilience!
Resilience has long been a pretty useless stat minus dodging death on occasion in PvP if you get it beyond a certain point. Later, they added the ability to break out of stasis faster, then they nerfed stasis freezes, so that was pretty much pointless. The TWAB talked about how it would now bolster flinch resistence.
But now in Season of the Haunted, Resilience has become bar none, the most important stat in the game. It now offers direct damage reduction which is essential in harder PvE content especially, and the higher scale values of it are wild. Here’s the full chart:
- Tier 1 – 1%
- Tier 2 – 2%
- Tier 3 – 3%
- Tier 4 – 4%
- Tier 5 – 8%
- Tier 6 – 14%
- Tier 7 – 20%
- Tier 8 – 26%
- Tier 9 – 32%
- Tier 10 – 40% damage reduction
Yes, you’re reading that correctly, if you have 100 Resilience, you have permanent 40% damage reduction, which is essentially like having pre-nerf Protective Light on at all times. As you can see, the values only really start to be ultra-significant in Tier 6 or above, and they really, really ramp up in those last few tiers with 6-8% jumps each level. Keep in mind, Resilience before this was something like a 10% shield capacity increase at max level.
Now, this has made Resilience a must-have on all classes, not just Titans who benefit from lower class ability cooldowns also. It’s even worth sacrificing Recovery for, which many have had at 100 for ages now. There’s simply no better stat.
Why did Bungie do this? Partially to make Resilience relevant, to be sure, but I also think maybe they finally realized that damage mitigation in Destiny needed some help, ie. GM content where you cannot go within 20 feet of an enemy without getting instantly blown up. More survivability means more playstyles are viable in more activities.
But even still, this is very extreme, and I am expecting this is probably going to be nerfed. I cannot see that final tier staying at 40% forever, given that they just nerfed Protective Light from giving you that kind of damage reduction sometimes. When one thing becomes too much of an outlier, like now everyone wanting 100 Resilience builds, it’s probably not long for this worlds.
But what I don’t understand is again, why this was kept a secret in the first place. I know a lot of people played last season and like always, probably sharded a bunch of armor with high Resilience. Out of curiosity, I kept some big Resilience pieces because the one thing that TWAB did talk about was that high Resilience was going to give something like 10% flinch reduction, which I thought could be useful. But no mention of the 40% damage reduction. So weird!
In any case, now you know. There are other great survivability options this season too like Armor of the Dying Star and Classy Restoration, but those are temporary mods. I mean, Resilience being this crazy might be temporary too, if it gets nerfed, but enjoy it while you can.
